The European component of the American Le Mans Series loses commercial steam for the pending 2002 season, prompting series honcho Don Panoz to reorient the schedule back towards exclusively North American dates. Pratt & Miller with the Corvette C5-R entry earns its second consecutive ALMS GTS constructors' championship by a wide margin over the rest as driver Ron Fellows snares his maiden drivers' title and shares the putative honors with teammate Johnny O'Connell. The NASCAR-operated Grand-American series, also suffering at attendance from the lack of a compelling LMP division, builds its 2002 racing season around its Daytona and Watkins Glen venues. Scuderia Ferrari of Washington with the 360GT entry comes away with its maiden Grand-Am putative overall GT constructors' title by a wide margin over TRG Porsche. Chris Bingham of Fordahl Racing tallies his second consecutive GTS drivers' crown, while Cort Wagner and Bill Auberlen of Scuderia Ferrari of Washington crush the competition for the overall GT putative honors

HeM applies the Putative Model to all racing seasons for two primary purposes: First, to effectively normalize all racing seasons for empirical comparison across the decades, and second, to step clear of series organizers which score season championships primarily out of commercial interest or to attract manufacturer participation. The Putative Model simply scores all seasons in the same fashion as a standard track and field meeting, with the only purpose of tracking what takes place at the finishing stripe If the Putative Champion differs from the nominal Series Champion, please note the (SC) notation below.
