Pratt & Miller with the Corvette C5-R easily snares the 2001 ALMS GTS constructors' championship by a wide margin over the field. The arcane ALMS points system awards Terry Borcheller in the Saleen Ford with the GTS drivers' crown, while Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell lead a four-pilot Pratt & Miller Corvette sweep for the putative laurels. The Grand-Am endurance series under the France family finds it legs and attracts earnest privateer interest for the 2001 season. Fordahl Racing with the Saleen S7-R entry earns the overall Grand-Am GT constructors' margin by a wide margin over the Grand-Am field with overall co-champion drivers Chris Bingham and Ron Johnson. The United States falls under attack to terrorists on September 11 who hijack four commercial airliners and crash the same into the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington DC, and a farm pasture in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

HeM applies the Putative Model to all racing seasons for two primary purposes: First, to effectively normalize all racing seasons for empirical comparison across the decades, and second, to step clear of series organizers which score season championships primarily out of commercial interest or to attract manufacturer participation. The Putative Model simply scores all seasons in the same fashion as a standard track and field meeting, with the only purpose of tracking what takes place at the finishing stripe If the Putative Champion differs from the nominal Series Champion, please note the (SC) notation below.

Noteworthy 2001 Races

2001 XXXV Daytona 24 Hour Daytona Beach, Florida2001 2001 XXXV Daytona 24 Hour At Daytona for the 24 Hour (GARRA sanction) in February, the race comes to a GTS-classified Pratt & Miller Chevrolet Corvette C5-R under Johnny O’Connell (US), Ron Fellows (CA), Chris Kneifel (US), and Franck Fréon (FR) in rainy conditions that covers 2335.4 miles (average 97.29 mph), eight laps ahead of a Porsche entry. The swifter SRP prototypes all falter by early Sunday morning and the #2 GTS-class P&M Corvette finally moves out front after the race leading Dyson Riley & Scott entry in devastating fashion loses fire in the twenty-first hour. The race features a closely monitored P&M Corvette entry driven by Dale Earnhardt and son Dale Jr. Photo Credit: John Brooks.
