Putative Driver: Steve Millen (NZ)
Putative Constructor Entry Specification: Model 300ZX, 2.96-liter, six-cylinder vee, aluminum engine, DOHC, fuel injection, dual turbocharged, five-speed, ventilated disc brakes, carbon fibre-aluminum/chromoly tubular spaceframe chassis, double wishbone independent suspension, 755 horsepower (Clayton Cunningham Racing, Kazumasu Takagi).

IMSA in 1992 rebadges its upper-level GTO classification as GTS with no corresponding specification amendments for the applicable entries. With the withdrawal of Mazda from IMSA racing in 1992, Cunningham Nissan with its 300ZX entry prevails for the putative constructors' title by a comfortable margin over Gentilozzi Rocketsports and its Cutlass silhouette. New Zealander and Cunningham ace Steve Millen snares his maiden drivers' crown.

HeM applies the Putative Model to all racing seasons for two primary purposes: First, to effectively normalize all racing seasons for empirical comparison across the decades, and second, to step clear of series organizers which score season championships primarily out of commercial interest or to attract manufacturer participation. The Putative Model simply scores all seasons in the same fashion as a standard track and field meeting, with the only purpose of tracking what takes place at the finishing stripe If the Putative Champion differs from the nominal Series Champion, please note the (SC) notation below.

Noteworthy 1992 Races

1992 Portland Grand PrixPortland, Oregon1992 1992 Portland Grand PrixAt PIR for the Grand Prix (one hour) in July, the race comes to a Rocketsports Oldsmobile Cutlass under Darin Brassfield (US) that covers 89.69 miles (average 89.59 mph), under two seconds ahead of a Nissan driven by Steve Millen. Racing in tight quarters over the closing miles, the Nissan 300ZX entry beneath Millen moves out front after passing the race leading Cutlass driven by Brassfield with only three laps remaining, yet Brassfield returns the favor on the final circuit for a slender and dramatic victory.
