The FIA in 2016 attempts to spice up its three-round qualifying format with real-time entry eliminations during each segment, yet the constructors, enthusiasts, and other race observers react nastily to the changes, and the sanctioning body reverts back to its 2015 structure after Bahrain in April. The FIA, also seeking to better manage in-race communications between team and driver, mandates the retirement of any entry in immanent danger of failure ascertained by telemetry after Silverstone in July. The sanctioning body reinstates the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim in July after a one-year hiatus. In other news, Gene Haas of NASCAR repute enters an American-based team for the first time since the 1986 season. AMG Mercedes with the refined F1 W07 entry meets with no competition in taking its third consecutive constructors' title and tenth overall year-end honorific dating back to the Grand Prix era. In another mesmerizing duel between the Mercedes pilots, Nico Rosberg builds an early season lead only to watch teammate Lewis Hamilton join him atop the table by Hungary in July. In a scrappy finish to the end, Rosberg re-asserts control over the chase at Singapore in September and desperately holds off a furious rush by Hamilton over the closing four events to narrowly secure his maiden drivers' crown, matching the feat of his father Keke for Williams back in the 1982 season. The victory by Hamilton in the season finale at Abu Dhabi in November nets the Briton the putative laurels as the contest prompts ill feelings between Mercedes and Rosberg against Hamilton, who the former accuse of deliberately slowing the race pace so to increase the probability of other entries passing and outscoring Rosberg out of his drivers' championship. American-based Haas Racing with Romain Grosjean places sixth in its F1 debut at Melbourne in March. Nico Rosberg wins four consecutive victories from season onset and completes a string of seven consecutive crosses extending from the 2015 season in early May. 18-year old Max Verstappen impressively wins in his Red Bull debut at Barcelona in May. Lewis Hamilton wins at Monaco in May for the first time since the 2008 season. F1 makes its inaugural visit to Baku, Azerbaijan in June. William driver Valtteri Bottas post the highest on-track speed in series history at approximately 235 mph during qualifying at Baku in June. Lewis Hamilton wins four consecutive races between early July and late August. Spectators jeer Lewis Hamilton for his aggressive driving at the Red Bull Ring in July. Lewis Hamilton wins at Silverstone for the third consecutive season in July. Nico Rosberg wins three consecutive races between late August and mid-September. Lewis Hamilton snares his fiftieth career series victory at Austin in October. Lewis Hamilton wins four consecutive races between late October and season end. Standing champion Nico Rosberg surprisingly retires from full-time racing at season end.

HeM applies the Putative Model to all racing seasons for two primary purposes: First, to effectively normalize all racing seasons for empirical comparison across the decades, and second, to step clear of series organizers which score season championships primarily out of commercial interest or to attract manufacturer participation. The Putative Model simply scores all seasons in the same fashion as a standard track and field meeting, with the only purpose of tracking what takes place at the finishing stripe If the Putative Champion differs from the nominal Series Champion, please note the (SC) notation below.

In a thrilling trip around the final circuit, second running Hamilton attempts a daring pass on race leading teammate Nico Rosberg driving a companion Mercedes at Turn 2 and both entries tangle, forcing Hamilton wide off the circuit. Rosberg suffers wing damage and Hamilton bests the German upon his return to the track at the next corner before holding off Rosberg for a dramatic victory.
