Formula 1 enters a new technological era in 2014 after the FIA implements new regulations mandating power units with a maximum displacement of 1.6 liters powered by a combination of turbocharged internal combustion along with an energy recovery system (ERS-K) that transforms excess heat from braking and exhaust into energy stored in an electric battery cell. The sanctioning body also mandates a new eight-speed semi-automatic gearbox mechanism and a reduction for the constructors to only five power units per season, while banning body molding purportedly aimed for camera mounting, the innovative Front-Rear Interconnected hydraulic active suspension system after the British Grand Prix in July as a moveable aerodynamic device, and in-race communications that transmit performance and interval data to drivers. The FIA also removes its power unit development freeze, provisionally implements the use of a Virtual Safety Car in the instance of specified caution conditions, restricts the amount of time crew members may spend time at the circuit at a given race weekend, permits each driver to select his or her own entry number with the exception that the defending champion maintains the option to utilize Number 1, and declares the awarding of double points for scoring results in the season finale at Abu Dhabi in November as the Turbo Hybrid Era commences. Midpack residing AMG Mercedes with the new Turbo Hybrid F1 W05 entry abruptly ascends into the limelight after handily overwhelming the field in 2014 for its first modern era constructors' title and first year-end honorific since the 1955 season. An utterly scintillating season long battle between Mercedes drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton spawns dissent between the pair before Hamilton (eleven victories) surges late in the campaign and earns his second drivers' crown and first since the 2008 season, breaking the four-year string by Red Bull pilot Sebastian Vettel. Kevin Magnussen of McLaren registers a second place result in his career debut at Melbourne in March. The stewards disqualify Red Bull pilot Daniel Ricciardo and his entry after his second place result at Melbourne in March after scrutineers detect illegal fuel flow to the power unit during postrace inspection. The event at Bahrain in April marks the first F1 event that begins before sunset and ends under the lights. The FIA resists a request by local activists protesting the repression of human rights in the Bahraini Kingdom to cancel the slated race in April. Tension abruptly emerges between Mercedes drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton at Bahrain in April after Rosberg expresses frustration after finishing behind Hamilton in the final race result. The FIA fines Toro Rosso €30,000 EUR for a detached wheel on the entry of Jean-Éric Vergne at Barcelona in May. Lewis Hamilton wins four consecutive races between late March and mid-May. Nico Rosberg prevails at Monaco in May for the second consecutive season amidst controversy surrounding whether Rosberg intentionally prevents Hamilton from completing his qualifying session, prompting both drivers to ignore one another upon the podium. F1 visits the newly reconstructed Red Bull Ring (formerly A-1 Ring) at Spielberg, Austria in June for the first time since the 2003 season. Spectators jeer Nico Rosberg on the podium at Spa in August and Monza in September for his purported unsporting driving tactics against teammate Lewis Hamilton over the season. The stewards discover prior to the race at Monza in September of the use of illegal power unit settings by Mercedes drivers at Bahrain in May and at Barcelona in the succeeding month, yet assess no penalties. Marussia driver Jules Bianchi suffers life-threatening injuries and falls into a coma after crashing into a tractor crane removing the damaged entry of Adrian Sutil in the rain at Suzuka in October. Lewis Hamilton seizes control of the drivers' championship with his victory at Suzuka in September. The Bianchi shunt triggers an investigation into whether the occasion required a Safety Car to minimize driver peril in the rain given the Sutil shunt and entry recovery. The FIA sanctions a race event in Russia at Sochi for the first time since the 1950 season. Lewis Hamilton wins five consecutive races between early September and early November. 2014 LXXII Grand Prix de Monaco Monte Carlo2014 2014 LXXII Grand Prix de Monaco At Monaco for the Grand Prix (260.5 kilometers) in May, the race comes to a German Mercedes F1 W05 under Nico Rosberg (DE) in 1:49:27.7 (average 88.73 mph), under ten seconds ahead of a companion Mercedes driven by Lewis Hamilton. Local favorite Rosberg leads the event wire-to-wire and claims victory in the principality for the second consecutive season. Tensions escalate between Rosberg and Hamilton after many observers suspect Rosberg of a deliberate circuit run-off late during the final qualifying session aimed at sabotaging a final flying lap by his teammate. Ricciardo moves out front after passing race leader Alonso, riding on fading rubber, at Turn 1 with less than three laps remaining. The spat between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg of Mercedes only intensifies after Hamilton defies team orders and refuses to let Rosberg pass for position despite the fact that his teammate required the same to fully take advantage of his differing tire strategy.
