The FIA in 2012 reiterates its ban upon off-throttle diffuser technology after mandating a specified exhaust design, as well as prohibits reactive ride-height technology, automated brake ducts for cooling purposes for all entries, and the use of DRS during a caution period. The sanctioning body also permits in-season testing, reinstates a wave-around rule for lapped entries during a caution period, and implements an overall four hour limit for race events. Ferrari, Red Bull, and Toro Rosso elect during the prior offseason to withdraw from the Formula One Teams Association over their collective belief that the existing cost cutting agreement among the constructors (RRA) contains loopholes available for exploitation by its fellow members. Red Bull Racing with its RB8 entry snares its third consecutive F1 constructors' title while Scuderia Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso blows a tremendous points lead at Hockenheim in July after defending champion Sebastian Vettel scores four consecutive victories in late season to overtake the Spaniard and collects his third consecutive drivers crown. Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg earns the reputed marque its first series victory since the 1955 season at Shanghai in April. F1 in controversial fashion elects to run the event at Bahrain in April in the face of widespread violent civilian protests related to the Arab Spring. Williams snares its first F1 victory with Pastor Maldonado (maiden series victory, first win for a Venezuelan driver) for the first time since the 2004 season and 133 starts at Barcelona in May. Red Bull takes its third consecutive victory at Monaco in May. The FIA deems the Red Bull floor pan illegal and demands its restoration to its former iteration at Montréal in June. The FIA fines Caterham/Lotus £10,000 GBP for an unsafe service lane release at Spa in September. The FIA fines Caterham/Lotus driver Romain Grosjean £50,000 GBP and suspends him for one race for causing a multi-car shunt at Spa in September. F1 makes its inaugural visit to Austin, Texas for the United States GP in November. Mercedes driver Michael Schumacher retires from full-time racing for the second time at season end.

HeM applies the Putative Model to all racing seasons for two primary purposes: First, to effectively normalize all racing seasons for empirical comparison across the decades, and second, to step clear of series organizers which score season championships primarily out of commercial interest or to attract manufacturer participation. The Putative Model simply scores all seasons in the same fashion as a standard track and field meeting, with the only purpose of tracking what takes place at the finishing stripe If the Putative Champion differs from the nominal Series Champion, please note the (SC) notation below.
