The FIA in 2010 again bans in-race refueling and KERS as mighty Mercedes takes over the assets of Brawn GP, lures F1 legend Michael Schumacher out of leisure, and joins the F1 scuffle as a constructor for the first time since the 1955 season. Frustrated Toyota withdraws from the series prior to season onset. McLaren responds the double diffuser of Red Bull with its own F-duct system that involves a small hollow in the rear wing to reduce drag. Red Bull Racing surges late in the 2010 season and fends off McLaren for its maiden constructors' title in its sixth season. A thrilling four-way battle for the drivers' crown between Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull), Fernando Alonso (Ferrari), Mark Webber (Red Bull), and Lewis Hamilton (McLaren) all comes down to the season finale at Abu Dhabi in November and a clutch cross by the 23-year old Vettel (five victories) lifts him as the youngest drivers' champion in series history. The FIA fines Scuderia Ferrari $100,000 USD for issuing team orders to Felipe Massa for allowing Fernando Alonso to pass him to gain maximum points with his victory at Hockenheim in July. The FIA fines Renault and Mercedes $50,000 USD each respectively for executing an unsafe release with Robert Kubica and allowing a loose wheel from Nico Rosberg to roll free in the service lane at the Hungaroring in August. F1 makes its inaugural visit to Yeongam, South Korea in October. Racing Evolution: Scooped waveform front wing for increased downforce (Red Bull). Combined pushrod-pullrod suspension (Formula 1).

HeM applies the Putative Model to all racing seasons for two primary purposes: First, to effectively normalize all racing seasons for empirical comparison across the decades, and second, to step clear of series organizers which score season championships primarily out of commercial interest or to attract manufacturer participation. The Putative Model simply scores all seasons in the same fashion as a standard track and field meeting, with the only purpose of tracking what takes place at the finishing stripe If the Putative Champion differs from the nominal Series Champion, please note the (SC) notation below.
