Tensions between the Formula 1 Constructors' Association (FOCA), solely representing the British constructors and led by Bernie Ecclestone, and FISA only deepen as the non-FOCA teams (all the major automobile manufacturers) embrace turbocharging technology, a direction not viewed with favor by the British teams. At Jarama in June, FISA president Jean-Marie Balestre, furious over driver unwillingness to attend pre-race meetings as well as with his own race officials who regularly side against him in rules disputes, declares the contest as a non-points scoring event and rescinds the licenses of all FOCA drivers. The non-FOCA teams of Renault, Ferrari, and Alfa Romeo subsequently withdraw from the contest before the King of Spain orders the race to start over the objections of local race officials. After the FOCA drivers pay a series of draconian fines levied by Balestre, FISA under enormous pressure reinstates all driver licenses in time for the succeeding event at Paul Ricard. Williams finally breaks through behind the successful ground effects design of Patrick Head with its FW07B entry that dominates the field to win its maiden constructors' title in 1980. Australian upstart Alan Jones of Williams displays a late season rush to fend off Brabham pilot Nelson Piquet and seals his first drivers' crown with his victory at Montréal in September. Future F1 champion Alain Prost makes his debut at Buenos Aires in January. Future F1 champion Nigel Mansell makes his debut at the Osterreichring in August. McLaren hires Ron Dennis to serve as its team manager in September. F1 makes its inaugural visit to Imola in September. Departures: Patrick Depailler, 35, b. 1980 XXXVIII Grand Prix de Monaco Monte Carlo1980 1980 XXXVIII Grand Prix de Monaco At Monaco for the Grand Prix (251.5 kilometers) in May, the race comes to a British Williams FW07B Ford under Carlos Reutemann (AR) in heavy rains in 1:55:34.4 (average 81.89 mph), under seventy-four seconds ahead of a Ligier entry. Reutemann, who takes advantage of the foul weather as the field slows to a crawl out of safety, takes the lead on Lap 55 of 76 after race leader Didier Pironi crashes out in his Ligier. 1980 XLII Großer Preis von Deutschland Hockenheim, West Germany1980 1980 XLII Großer Preis von Deutschland At Hockenheim for the German Grand Prix (305.5 kilometers) in August, a French Ligier JS11/15 Ford under Jacques Laffite (FR) takes race honors in 1:22:59.7 (average 137.25 mph), under four seconds ahead of a Williams driven by Carlos Reutemann. Laffite moves out front after race leader Alan Jones in his Williams drops a tire with only five laps remaining. Jones afterwards bitterly refuses to stand on the podium out of disappointment over his result. The race claims the life of reputed driver Patrick Depailler, who perishes in a practice session shunt.
