In the season finale in September, Fangio, forced to retire from the contest while battling for the crown, nonetheless prevails after his Ferrari teammate Peter Collins graciously offers him use of his own entry to allow the Argentine to notch a second-place finish in the event. 1956 XIV Grand Prix Automobile de Monaco Monte Carlo1956 1956 XIV Grand Prix Automobile de Monaco At Monaco for the Grand Prix (314.5 kilometers) in May, the race comes to an Italian Officine Maserati 250F under Stirling Moss (GB) in 3:00:32.9 (average 65.32 mph), under seven seconds ahead of a Ferrari driven by Peter Collins. Moss takes the lead and never faces a challenge as race favorite Juan Manuel Fangio in his Ferrari endures a series of mishaps that remove the Argentine from contention.
