After ALFA Romeo makes the unanticipated decision to leave Formula 1 at the end of 1951, the FIA faces 1952 with a dramatically reduced number of entries to fill its starting grids at season onset. To attract new makes and privateers to the endeavor, the sanctioning body runs all of its WDC contests to Formula 2 regulations which mandates smaller two-liter power units. Scuderia Ferrari collects its second consecutive constructors' title. Future F1 champion Mike Hawthorn makes his debut at Spa in June. F1 makes its inaugural visit to Rouen in July. 1952 XV Großer Preis von Deutschland Mayen, West Germany1952 1952 XV Großer Preis von Deutschland At the Nürburgring for the German Grand Prix (410.5 kilometers) in August, an Italian Scuderia Ferrari under Alberto Ascari (IT) takes the flag in 3:06:13.3 (average 82.20 mph), under fifteen seconds ahead of a companion Ferrari entry. Ascari makes a late stop for service with only two laps remaining and requires a furious rally in the final mile to catch teammate Nino Farina for the victory. 1952 XXII Grand Prix des Frontiéres Chimay, Belgium1952 1952 XXII Grand Prix des Frontiéres At Chimay for the Grand Prix des Frontières (237.5 kilometers, non-championship) in June, the race comes to a British HWM Alta under Paul Frère (BE) in rainy conditions in 1:38:48 (average 90.15 mph), a second ahead of a Connaught driven by Kenneth Downing. Downing leads a close pursuing Frère in the closing laps, yet as the drivers begin the final circuit, spectators swiftly spill out from the stands onto the track. Downing reaches the final corner before the finish before lifting out of caution for the milling fans, yet the sudden lift sends Downing into a spin and Frère sprints past for an opportune victory. 1952 XII Grand Prix Automobile de Monaco Monte Carlo1952 1952 XII Grand Prix Automobile de Monaco At Monaco for the Grand Prix (314.5 kilometers, non-championship) on a very warm day in June, an Italian Scuderia Marzotto Ferrari 225S under Count Vittorio Marzotto (IT) takes race honors in 3:21:28.4 (average 58.19 mph) under sixteen seconds ahead of a Ferrari entry. After a shunt at Ste-Devote on Lap 24 removes the quality from the field, Marzotto and Eugenio Castellotti in his Talbot dice over the remaining distance, with Marzotto winning the battle of overheating entries and rewarding Scuderia Ferrari with its maiden victory in the principality.
