The FIA announces a seven-race Formula 1 series in 1950 that features the World Championship of Drivers to represent the highest level racing specification in global motorsport. Only the best four results over the seven meetings for a given driver count towards the drivers championship title (the HeM putative scoring model includes the scoring of every entry eligible for scoring in each event). ALFA Romeo wins the putative constructors' honorifics, while its 46-year old driver Giuseppe 'Nino' Farina prevails by a narrow margin over Juan Manuel Fangio for the inaugural WCD drivers' crown with a sensational performance in the final meeting at Monza in September. 1950 British Grand Prix Silverstone, England1950 1950 British Grand Prix At Silverstone for the inaugural FIA Formula 1 event, the British Grand Prix (202 miles) in May, the race comes to a 1.5-liter Italian SA ALFA Romeo 158 under Nino Farina (IT) in 2:13:23.6 (average 90.95 mph), under three seconds ahead of a companion ALFA Romeo driven by Luigi Fagioli. After taking on service, Farina moves out front on Lap 32 and speeds away to an unchallenged victory. The English royal family of King George VI, Queen Elizabeth, and Princess Margaret attend the affair along with 200,000 spectators as the first contest in Formula 1 history goes off with little trouble. Lap 1 almost washes away the contest in disaster when a rogue wave from the Mediterranean floods Tabac Corner and causes a stack up of stalled entries, yet Fangio manages to escape the carnage and sprint away for the victory. A British Cooper entry under American Harry Schell stands as the first non-front positioned engine vehicle to compete in a Grand Prix contest since the Auto Unions from the Thirties. 1950 XXI Gran Premio d'Italia Monza, Italy1950 1950 XXI Gran Premio d'Italia At Monza for the Italian Grand Prix (504 kilometers) in September, an Italian SA ALFA Romeo under Nino Farina (IT) crosses first in 2:51:17.4 (average 109.70 mph), under seventy-nine seconds ahead of a Ferrari entry. Farina finds a dominating performance for the final race of the season, and the retirement of Juan Manuel Fangio by way of failed gearbox in his Maserati on Lap 23 gifts the racing attorney the inaugural F1 drivers' title by a narrow margin over his Argentine rival.
